ACTOR HEADSHOT PREP GUIDE
I usually aim for three core types of shots, but we’ll tailor everything to your goals and casting type.
The Commercial look: Warm, friendly, and approachable. This is your “everyday you.” Think natural light, soft tones, and an inviting smile.
The Theatrical / Dramatic Look: This is where your depth and emotional range come through. Stronger expressions, moodier lighting, and more intensity. It’s about showing truth, complexity, and presence.
The Character / Cinematic Look: This one leans into storytelling and personality. Maybe it’s edgier, quirkier, or more stylized — something that hints at specific roles you could play.
What to Wear
• Bring a variety of simple pieces in solid colors that flatter your skin tone.
• Avoid busy patterns, large logos, or distracting details.
• Keep it simple and classic, you don’t want your headshots to look dated in two years. Think clean & timeless.
• Layering and textures add depth and variety.
• Bring more options than you think you’ll need.
• Keep accessories minimal unless a look specifically calls for them.
• Clothes should be clean, well-fitted, and in good condition.
• Undergarments: Bring specific pieces (nude or strapless bra, pasties, etc.) for chosen outfits.
Note: There’s a steamer, lint roller, hangers, and a clothing rack available, but prepping clothes beforehand will save time. A garment or dry-cleaner bag keeps clothes crisp and photo-ready.
Hair, Makeup & Grooming
• Keep your look natural and authentic, similar to how you’d appear for an audition or self-tape.
• Bring essentials for touch-ups: lip balm, brush/comb, powder, and hair products.
• Photoshop can handle small blemishes or dark circles, but your real self should shine through.
• You’re welcome to bring your own makeup artist or hairstylist to the session. If you prefer, I can connect you with a trusted MUA who specializes in natural, camera-ready looks for headshots.

• Openness and playfulness lead to the best results.
• Practice expressions and smiles in the mirror or with selfies.
